Tips for Matching Different Patterns Once You Know How to Tie a Tie

There are two pattern-heavy outfit types, and both turn heads. One turns heads because it is atrocious while the other turns heads because it is impeccable. If you can pull off pattern-heavy outfits by coordinating your suit, tie and other accessories well, then the time you took to learn how to tie a tie will not be in vain. Thankfully, there are some simple, time-honored rules for mixing patterns that can ease your coordination. Here are some of them.

Keep the colors muted

Stick to muted colors so that you do not have so much going on in your outfit. If you pick outstanding colors like red, orange or white for your outfit, this means that you will have a pattern and color that both stand out, something that leaves you looking too ‘’busy’’. Opt for shades of indigo, juniper, navy, black, green and brown when wearing patterned outfits.

Introduce patterns gradually

The base items of your outfit, like shirts, trousers and jackets, cost more than its accessories. As such, start with patterned accessories like pocket squares and the tie you buy when you learn how to tie a tie. These accessories can be easily and inexpensively switched, so you can afford to experiment with them.

Complement patterns instead of matching them

Having two matching patterns in a similar color looks amateurish and boring. To level your look, opt for colors that complement each other. If you choose to complement your shirt and tie patterns, ensure the shirt’s pattern is a bit smaller than the tie’s so that the latter does not get ‘’lost’’.

Learning how to tie a tie does not automatically guarantee that all patterned ties you pick will look good. Be smart about how you mix the sizes, colors and types of patterns in your outfits. The tips above will go some way in pointing you in the right direction.
